In June 2024 the Mountain Safety Council commissioned Walsh & Beck to produce a new video series to support backcountry safety.

The Walsh & Beck crew spent five days filming in the Arrowsmith Mountain Range in South Canterbury. Working with an experienced crew of mountaineering experts the team captured footage and interviews that would be developed into the 23-part series launched today.

Avalanche Tips and Terms: From the forecast to the field is a free 23-part series aimed at beginner and intermediate alpine enthusiasts, including skiers, snowboarders, mountaineers, alpine trampers and hunters. Developed with the generous support of Tūpiki Trust, the series provides essential knowledge to help navigate New Zealand’s dynamic and often challenging alpine terrain.

The series has been developed to break down the essential avalanche knowledge—from the basics of avalanche terminology, to interpreting the NZAA forecast, recognising problem terrain, and making safe decisions in the mountains.
